Of all the underrated bands out there, I think margot and the nuclear so and so's takes the prize for the best. How they are not popular beyond belief is well, beyond belief. With a sort of alternative, indie, and at times a little rockish sound they really do work with almost an musical occasion you could encounter. The singer has a GREAT voice, I mean really really great. Like he "I could fall asleep listening to this but I need to stay up to hear more" kind of great.
I recommend you start out with a few songs and they look at the rest, don't stop at one if you don't like it because with their changing sound you are insane if you don't like at least one.
"A children's crusade on acid"
"birds"
"German motor car"
"broadripple is burning"
"holy cow!"
"birds" and "holy cow!" are the most upbeat of the songs above so if you are into that, start with them. The rest are slower and in some cases a bit sad sounding but extremely beautiful and calming.
